AFTER a pair of successful performances in the ongoing Rebisco Girls Volleyball Season 15 National League of Champions, the Bacolod Tay Tung High School fell short against host-Holy Rosary College of Sta. Rosa, Laguna in Day-3 of the tournament.
The Tay Tung Thunderbolts opened a dominating first set, 17-9 behind Marianne Sotomil, Alyssa Bertolano and Joan Doguna. The Holy Rosary tried to cut down the lead to 5 points, 19-14 but the Bacolod side made another run to eventually pull a first set edge, 25-16.
However, Holy Rosary surged to an early 8-2 lead in the second set off the errors of Tay Tung – forcing Coach Evelyn Aguillo to call a timeout. But, drought continues on the Bacolod side as the host-team extended their lead to 12-3.
Tay Tung tried to put the game closer at 3-point difference, 22-19 on Doguna’s back-to-back attacks. A block by Mabet Torres extended Holy Rosary’s lead to 23-19 but, Doguna nailed another solid spike at the middle of the host’s defense to keep them on striking distance, 23-20.
However, a back-to-back score from Sta.Rosa-based team skipper Trexia Mae Genesis tied the game, 1 set apiece.
In the final set, Tay Tung established an early 4-point edge, 8-4 but, Holy Rosary slowly cut the lead and gained momentum until tied the score at 11-all. While the momentum shifted towards the host team, the visitors committed consecutive errors and lost focus as Holy Rosary extended their lead, 15-11.
Tay Tung has the chance to pull away after a 17-all tie but Joan Monares committed a service error in favor of Holy Rosary, 18-17. But, after a 19-all even, the Holy Rosary eventually took the third set, 25-20 and stayed undefeated in the Pool B.*
