A REGU from the reigning 2017 Palarong Pambansa champions of Victorias National High School (VNHS) carried the national colors in the sepak takraw event of the recently-concluded 9th ASEAN School Games in Singapore.
VNHS principal Dr. Cheryl Tondo said that composing the winning regu are Ian Gerald Sudayan, Ricky Guarino and Edhric Dave Balderas. Other Negrense sepak takraw players include Victoriahanon June Clyde Abellano, Bata National High School’s Paul John Embahador and Kervy Jules Cayetano from Lopez Jaena National High School-Murcia.
The bronze medal finish by the Philippine sepak takraw team sparked like gold because it was the first time that the Filipino side won a medal in the ASG.
Also settled with a bronze medal for this event was host-Singapore while Laos and Malaysia got 2 bronzes apiece while Indonesia got 3 silvers and Thailand registered 3 gold medals.
Overall, the Philippines placed sixth with 13 gold medals, 8 silvers and 21 bronzes – behind the top-ranked Thailand with 29 gold medals, 25 silvers and 32 bronze medals followed by Indonesia with 26 gold medals, 33 silvers and 26 bronzes.
Host-Singapore settled for third with 23 gold medals, 27 silvers and 24 bronzes as Malaysia got 22 gold medals, 16 silvers and 36 bronzes; and Vietnam on fifth place with 20-22-9 medal haul.
Myanmar and Laos are in 7th and 8th places with 4 and 2 bronze medals, respectively, while Brunei and Cambodia both did not make any medal.
