CADIZ City prides Kerr Longno and Clarence Villaflor came out with great performances over the weekend to capture the U19 boys singles and U13 boys singles, respectively, in the just-concluded MVP National Juniors Championships national finals held in Cagayan de Oro.
Meanwhile, Longno teaming up with Mitzi Joy Pantoja finished bronze in the U19 mixed doubles while Phoebe Jay Villaflor, and the duo of John Mark Valenzuela and Jacqueline Marie Pantoja settled with the same honors in the U15-girls singles and U17-mixed doubles, respectively.
Also won gold in the tournament is the team of St. John’s Institute Ellana Tan and Mia Mangalimutan of Talisay City for the U17 girls doubles.
For head coach Jordan Sun, the MVP national finals is done. “We would like to offer all these to almighty God for giving us the opportunity to represent our good city into the national competition. To our city officials headed by Mayor Patrick Escalante, the city sports council led by Bany John Sarabia, and Councilors Wilfredo Cervantes and Owen Desuyo, thank you for believing in us,” Sun said.
Sun also thanked the North Negros College administration for the support while lauded his protégé coach Ernesto Layao for the job well done. “You guys are my strength. Stay humble,” he said.
The tournament, then known as the Sun Cellular National Juniors Badminton tournament, has helped the country in providing potential players the avenue to show their wares.
Moreover, this is part of the MVP Sports Foundation’s efforts to comb the countryside with strong potential making the national team and represent the country in future international competitions. Likewise, this will help strengthen the grassroots development program in badminton,” said Smart Sports’ Christopher Quimpo.*
