Verdun ruled Pinta Flores Open chess tourney

Former STI-West Negros University standout Xavier John Verdun of Cadiz City scored 6.5 points (29.5 BH) to bag the 2-day 2016 Pinta Flores Individual Open Chess Tournament title in San Carlos City.

Among notable victories made by Verdun came in Round 6 when he defeated eventual 3rd placer NM Rolzon Roullo of Dumaguete City – improving his Elo rating to 2177.

The Cadiz City-hailed woodpusher also routed Bacolod City’s Henry Taglucop, Christopher Tubalado of Cebu City, Aeron Keife Sinining of Escalante City, Marvin Ting of Silay City, and fellow Cadiznon John Vincent Merabe.

Meanwhile, finished behind Verdun is NM Rodolfo Toledo of Bacolod City who registered 6.0 points (32.5 BH) – including a last match draw with the champion.

Rounding up the top 10 are: Bon Tibod (6.0 pts., 30.5 BH), IM Sander Severino (6.0 pts., 28.5 BH), Raymund dela Pena (6.0 pts., 28.5 BH), Jethro Esplanada (5.5 pts., 30.0BH), IM Oliver Dimakiling (5.0 pts. 30.0 BH), and Yves Christian Fiel (5.0 pts., 28.0 BH).

The standard chess event is organized by San Carlos – Negros Chess Club and sanctioned by the Negros Chess Federation of the Philippines.*
